This week I will talk a lot about Dads. We are looking at this subject through the lens of Genesis 22. Take some time to read it and become familiar with it as our small group time on Sunday will come from the text as well.
Seeing God as a dad is a cool illustration......as long as you have a good dad. If you don't the illustration tends to fall flat and your view of who God is, is limited by the weaknesses and inconsistencies of your earthly father. I don't have a relationship with my dad. I used to though. We were tight once and we shared a lot of the same interests. We did a lot together and experienced some cool things together. Things changed a few years ago and due to some extremely bad decisions my Dad made I am unable to have any kind of relationship with him. I still love him but it is different now. I had one of two decisions to make when it came to the situation with my dad and my relationship to God. I could become bitter and distance myself from God as I was distanced from my dad or I could allow my vision of God to be shaped by who He really is as opposed to just a flesh version of him that I called my dad. It has been a hard process but I can say that we can learn a lot from our dads. Their strength and their weaknesses. We can see the attributes of God through their provision, their love, their correction and their protection. We can also cling to our Heavenly Father when our dad's screw up. We can see that though they are unstable, inconsistent, and unfaithful that God remains. That when the weight of the world is on our dad's shoulders and they crumble that the same world rests gently in the hands of our Heavenly Father.
Take some time and journal your thoughts about your dad. What are you thankful for? What is it that drives you nuts?
Now journal some thoughts on God, any similarities? Any differences?
