Having everything but the one thing that matters

Being in the Air Force was cool. I got the chance to shoot guns, wear a cool uniform, even wear a badge (I was a cop). I was assigned to the Elite Guard at Stratcom Headquarters and my uniform was quite the get up. It included dress blues, an ascot (this weird fabric around the neck), this cool rope around my shoulder, a blue beret, shined boots with white laces, nametag, medals, a 9mm, a utility belt (not as cool as batman’s) a shiny chrome belt buckle and last but certainly not least , a restricted area badge. I mean getting ready took me almost as long as a girl before her Senior prom. I remember one morning specifically. I had to be at work at around 4:30am (yeah you read that right) 4:30am!! I had woke up a little late and was in a rush. I got on my uniform, grabbed everything and headed to work. I parked in my spot and was just outside the door when I realized I had forgotten the most important part of my uniform, my restricted area badge. I mean, everything else would have been forgiven. I could have borrowed anything else from the night shift except that! The one thing that I really needed I left at home and therefore I had to run home and get it before work. I was late that day and got reamed out by my Sergeant but I survived. Thinking back on that, it is amazing how in life we can get 99% right in some things but we still don’t pass. That morning the one thing that really mattered I forgot. I remembered everything else but that one thing held me back. It reminds me of a teaching of Jesus in Mark 8:34-38.

Read Mark 8:34-38

What does Jesus mean by gaining the whole world but forfeiting our soul?
