During our discussion yesterday the topic of Mercy and Grace and their differences came up. Here is a few thoughts and scriptures to help us understand what these terms and even more importantly these characteristics of God look like.
Mercy- Greek word (eleos - extended for the alleviation of the consequences of sin) If you remember this word is used when someone who is guilty is not given the punishment that they deserve as a result of their sin. (example- You cheat on a test and the teacher decides not to send you to the principals office)
Grace- Greek word (charis- a favor done without any expectation of return. Not only bring forgiveness to the sinner but brings joy and thankfulness to him as well) This goes beyond mercy. Let's use the same example (You cheat on a test and the teacher chooses not only to keep you from the Principal's office (what you deserve) she extends you grace by allowing you another chance to take the test.
Eph 2:1-5
vs 4 His mercies saved us from what we deserved
vs5 His grace gives us eternal Life which we didn't deserve
Hopefully this helps! You guys rock!
Mercy is not getting the punishment or consequences you deserve, Grace is getting the blessings, joy, favor, acceptance that you don't deserve.
