Nice Old Clothes (Matthew 6:19-21)

My mom just came in town yesterday and in the few hours we have spent together she has already began doing what she does best....spoil me and my family. After shopping with Beth for most of the day, she returned to our apartment with arms full of groceries and other bags of merchandise. After putting away all the groceries (my mom purchased...thanks MOM!) Beth showed me the contents of the other bags. Bag after bag filled with new clothes for me and the rest of my family. It isn't even Christmas yet!!! Well after being forced to try on all my new clothes by my wife (she loves when I model for her) it was time to hang all my new clothes up in the closet. Problem...no hangers. You see my closet is filled with all my other clothes. Nice clothes, but not new anymore.Nice old clothes. As I looked around the closet I realized that most of the clothes hanging in there were Christmas gifts from the last few years. It seems like just yesterday that I opened up some of those clothes from Christmas's past but now they are going to find themselves hanging at the local goodwill. It reminded me that a lot of things will be under our trees this Christmas. Toys, gadgets. remote control everythings, iPods, and clothes. All these things are awesome, but the truth is that one day...sooner than you think, you will be boxing them up for goodwill or throwing them away in the trash for something newer and cooler. That is why Jesus said what He did about storing up our treasures in heaven. Jesus isn't against things.....He never was, He just knows they will end up by the curb one day. Take some time today to read Matthew 6:19-21 and keep your stuff in perspective this year.

Merry Christmas!
