When I was growing up I was taught that the true value of something was found in it's ability to stand the test of time...Very deep thought, but to a kid growing up I could care less about how valuable it was going to be to me 10 years from now or even 10 minutes from now....I would just want what I wanted and I would do anything to get it..... For example my first job was at a water park as a cook in a restaurant.....What was I thinking, what were they thinking? First off, at the age of 13 I ate everything in sight including the food I was supposed to be selling. Secondly, I would and will never trust a 13 year old to prepare a meal in a kitchen that is behind closed doors...Just to much possibility for "creative" cooking to take place. The point of my little story is that on payday my friend Tommy and I would take our cash "they paid us under the table" and go to the nearest Walgreen's and spend every dime of our money on candy. After demolishing the candy in the car on the way home all I would have to show for my labors were love handles and an upset stomach. It doesn't change much as you get older...The checks get bigger (a little at least) and the candy is replaced by iPods, clothes, music, cars, houses, boats, 4 wheelers, and so on and so on but the principle remains the same. No matter what you buy in life, no matter how awesome it is, it will never pass the test of time when placed on the scale of eternity. In Mark 13:31 Jesus says ""Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." I once heard someone much smarter than me say that "there are 3 things that are eternal....God, God's Word's and the souls of men." I guess that today, in the midst of our lives surrounded by stuff, that we would be reminded of the the three things that really matter and spend time investing in those.
