How is it that a gift so small could have so much significance? How is it that gifts so large could be so insignificant? Is that just bad economics?.... I guess if economics were the focus it would be. If money is what Jesus is impressed with, this account of a real incident in His life would not make any sense. When I read passages like this I realize just how unlike Jesus I really am. I see the surface so many times. I see and judge things as they appear. Jesus sees the heart. He knows the life journey of both the rich and the poor. He know where we have come from and sees where we are going. In this passage a poor widow gives a fraction of a penny as an offering to God and Jesus is pleased. He shares that her gift was more than all of the others.....but Jesus, it was nothing....merely an amount we wash in our jeans accidentally or throw out when we find it under a piece of furniture when we are moving. A penny????? Jesus what about the big gifts??? The ones with lots of zeros on the end. The kind that could be used to renovate the church or get plasma screens in the children's area????? Jesus sees things different and oh, how I dream to see through His eyes. He sees pure, right through. He sees a person who appears to give nothing really give everything while a person who gives what appears to be so much really give nothing at all. This isn't a teaching on economics, it is an example of what Christ calls us to, illustrated in the life of a person who would of otherwise gone unnoticed. Lord, thank you for showing me what pleases you. Help me present to you my whole life and not just a calculated percentage of who I am....May I worship you with my whole life and not just a fraction. Please reshape my bad economics...
